PRODUCTS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
We supply a unique portfolio, making a difference for each customer and each application — from chemical specialties to process fluids, coatings to lubricants, and more.
We make some of our key raw materials in-house, allowing us to formulate many products from the ground up and gives us more control over the solutions we deliver to our customers. It also allows us to better manage the impact our products have on the world around us.
We believe in transparency of information, and therefore make product information readily available on this website, including requests for Safety Data Sheets.
Other ways that we ensure our products are safe include:
- GHS. The Globally Harmonized System (GHS) is meant to standardize the classification and labeling of chemicals. It is mandatory in most countries where we operate, but not all. As a result, we are treating this as a global initiative but implementing it regionally.
- REACH. We are heavily involved in REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals). Quaker became involved in the European REACH community as early as 2005, well before registration deadlines began in 2010.
- Responsible Care 14001. As part of our certification in North America, expected to be complete in 2017, we will adhere to the Responsible Care Product Safety Code. This code sets forth a set of practices to manage chemical product safety as part of an overall HSSE (health, safety, security, environmental) management system.
Product Stewardship is the management system that integrates SHE responsibilities into every phase of our products’ lifecycles.
For many years, Quaker has been at the forefront of creating effective product stewardship programs for our industry, partnering with key organizations such as the Independent Lubricant Manufacturers Association (ILMA) and the Union of the European Lubricants Industry (UEIL).
In 2014 we established set of “green chemistry principles” that our Technical Community now uses as a guideline for product development. The philosophy of our Principles is rooted in the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990, and the Principles are:
- Prevention of waste will always be a consideration in design, manufacturing, and application of our products.
- Wherever practical, products will use and generate substances that possess little or no toxicity to human health and
- We strive for safe use, with negligible impact to human health in the applications of our products.
- We will consider process efficiency for manufacturing in product design, and carefully examine the most efficient
means of manufacturing to maximize yield, improve efficiency, and reduce or prevent waste.
- We will weigh the benefits of the use of renewable feedstocks.
- We will consider end life – including ease of disposal, degradation, and impact to environment – in the design process
of our products.
- Substances and the form of a substance used in a chemical process should be chosen to minimize the potential for chemical accidents – including releases, explosions, and fires.
We expect it will take many years to fully implement these principles, and to build a culture of formulating products that do not contain potentially harmful materials.
Internally, Quaker’s Quality Management Systems help to ensure we are delivering on our promises regarding quality control of our products and processes. By tracking metrics such as out-of-spec products, first pass [or first-run] yield and customer complaints/customer problem resolution, we hold ourselves accountable for our actions and can access real-time performance.
Externally, our efforts are acknowledged globally by the International Organization for Standardization. We have earned ISO 9001 certification at nearly every Quaker site around the globe, as well as at customer sites where we deliver services and products directly.
R&D AND INNOVATION.
Behind each Quaker product is extensive R&D to ensure our solutions are cutting-edge and optimized for their purpose. Our technology is based on deep process knowledge and expertise, and our formulations are tailored for optimal performance for each customer, site and process.
In 2015, we invested in lab equipment that mimics our customers’ metalworking equipment and built a Research Pilot Mill in China to help test new technical solutions in Steel and Aluminum. All of this helps us to test new ideas and validate results before asking our customers to commit to product trials.
With innovative thinking backed by solid R&D, in recent years Quaker has commercialized several products, which have a reduced impact on the world around us. Some of these include:
- 2PAQ™ technology: a compatible, two-part coolant-cleaner that can be used first used as a cleaner and then be repurposed as a lubricant;
- QUAKERCOOL® BFF: a coolant that is free of both Boron and Formaldehyde Releasers;
- QWERL®: a Boron-free wet temper fluid for steel manufacturing;
- QUAKERCOAT®: zero-VOC coatings for the Tube & Pipe market;
- QUINTOLUBRIC®: biodegradable, fire-resistant hydraulic fluids that have an “eco-label” in Europe;
- QUINTOPLEX™: a first-of-its-kind, biodegradable, fire-resistant grease;
- FLEXICOOL™ Technology: launched in early 2015, this is a very innovative and versatile emulsion with minimal, very mild labeling.
At the heart of our business model is customer intimacy, and it pays off. Our top 10 customers have been with us for more than 10 years. For example, Quaker has supplied cold rolling oils to the largest steel mills in the United States since before World War II. Over the years, the owners of these mills and their management teams have changed several times, but we are still there — helping customers to improve their operations and reduce their costs.
To ensure we continue to satisfy our customers, we periodically conduct surveys and interviews to learn the value of our relationships, identify key needs, determine crucial areas of focus, and gain a clearer understanding of customer expectations. Sometimes our surveys are market specific or geographically specific, while others are global in nature.

For nearly 100 years, Quaker has partnered with its customers to improve their operations and reduce their overall costs. Very often, this includes CSR-related benefits as well, such as longer tool life, less product waste, direct re-use or recycling of products, reduced energy and water usage, and low or no VOCs.
